Submitted By: admin on Oct 05, 2016
In November 2015, the province initiated an independent review of the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act and the Tarion Warranty Corporation.
The Honourable J. Douglas Cunningham, QC was appointed as a special advisor to review protections for owners of new homes and identify opportunities to improve consumer protection. His final report will provide recommendations on how to improve consumer protection, accountability, transparency and board governance to help protect consumers buying new homes in Ontario.
Justice Cunningham has provided his interim progress report to the Minister of Government and Consumer Services. You can submit written feedback by email to TarionReview@ontario.ca. The province is requesting feedback on the interim progress report by October 14, 2016.
In the Condo Law News blog of law firm of Nelligan|O’Brien|Payne, lawyer Jim Davidson has been providing updates on the review of Tarion by Justice Cunningham. The links to his three updates are provided below.
The warranty program has a significant impact on condominium owners, boards and property managers. Accordingly, we encourage you to follow the review process and provide feedback to the province if you have specific suggestions or concerns.
