New Rules Coming for EV Charging in Condos

The first few deliveries of the Tesla Model 3, Tesla’s more affordable electric car, have refreshed the topic of Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers in condominiums.  Crossbridge has long encouraged  the installation of EV chargers.  Our EV protocol, released more than four years ago, provided a pathway to help our managers and boards navigate over the legal, technical and logistical hurdles of EV chargers in condominiums.  We are very proud that Plug’nDrive referenced our protocol to create the excellent guide Enabling EV Charging in Condominiums.

Recently, the Ontario government proposed some legislative changes to the condominium act intended to make the installation of EV charging stations in condominiums easier. We discussed these proposals in our December 2017 blog postingFor clarity, we are recommending that boards wait for the release of these changes before spending considerable resources on EV charging stations.  According to the ministry, these changes are due to be released in early (possibly Spring) 2018.

We have already assigned our Manager of Energy and Sustainability the task of updating our 2013 protocol to incorporate the legislative changes as soon as they are announced.
